Politicians have affairs. It happens all the time. BUT. When it comes to democrat politicians, a narrative has taken hold, the perception that democrats in particular are morally corrupt. From JFK, to Gary Hart, to Bill Clinton. Democrat leaders, for some reason, are called out on their extramarital affairs more than their republican counter parts.
Knowing that, I’m surprised that John Edwards put himself in the position (so to speak) of possibly ruining his chance at becoming president, (the affair seems to have took place during his campaign) as well as damaging democrats across the board. Edwards was the choice for most progressives over Clinton and Obama.
Republicans might try to use this to reinvigorate the narrative that they’re the party of moral responsibility, but I doubt it. The last few years haven’t been kind to republicans and their morality credibility. Still, McCain will be able to kick back and watch as Dems squirm when asked to comment on Edward’s admitted affair, with his wife battling cancer no less. What would have happened if Edwards had gotten the nomination?
There but for the grace of God…
