John McCain may have really stepped in it with this “can’t remember” stuff. Now his people are saying voters need to give him a break about it because he was a POW.
“This is a guy who lived in one house for five and a half years — in prison,” spokesman Brian Rogers told the Washington Post.

It does seem like they’re flirting with Giuliani/9/11 territory here, in which at subject that seems utterly immune to humor, used as a first resort, suddenly becomes a running joke among your political enemies and your late night comic friends.
Not only that, but people might put two and two together and figure his “gaffes” are a direct result of being a POW. This thing could begin to snowball on McCain.
